NMSHA Collaboration with the New Mexico Occupational Therapy Association (NMOTA)

NMSHA is working collaboratively with NMOTA in offering state-based CEUs for Occupational Therapists at our upcoming convention in October.  Members, please inform your OT colleagues of the course offerings at our convention, particularly Fridays presentation by Mo Taylor, OTR/L, and Marci Laurel, SLP, on Social Engagement.  In addition, NMOTA will be informing NMSHA of CEU opportunities for our members at their professional development events, and working collaborating with NMSHA on furthering legislative issues and initiatives that jointly affect our professions.

New Mexico Licensing Board Updates

NMSHA works collaboratively with the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Division on a number of licensure issues involving SLPs and Audiologists from around our state.  As you may be aware, NMSHA endorses the licensing of SLP Assistants in our state along with ASHA and a majority of other states in our union.  NMSHA lobbyists, Richard Romero and Sue Griffith, have been actively corresponding with legislators on rallying support for SLPA licensure at the 2019 session.  NMSHA is set to meet with members of the Legislative Education Committee in September of 2018 to present the current licensure draft along with rationale for legislators to support the licensure bill.  NMSHA members will be updated on progress at the convention “Hot Topics” session and on our website.

As presented at the last Regulation and Licensing Board meeting on August 10, the licensing board is addressing a number of rules relating to licensure issues, specifically relating to bilingual endorsement and reciprocity (or SLPs who are from out-of-state and applying for New Mexico licensure).  Updates will be provided via the NMSHA list serve and on our website. Please let me, or any of our Executive Board members, know of any licensing concerns that you may be experiencing so that we can address them with the licensing board.

Finally, NMSHA is collaborating with the licensing board on researching licensing for Audiology Assistants in our state and has representation on the Audiology Assistant licensing committee.   If you are interested in this topic and/or providing feedback on Audiology Assistant licensure, please contact me at sandynet@unm.edu.

Human Service Division (HSD) Proposes to Move Ancillary Services Off the DD Waiver

The legislative subcommittee for HSD held a public hearing the last week of July to accept public comment on HSD’s proposal to move ancillary services (PT, OT, SLP) from the DD Waiver to Medicaid Centennial Care.  Carlos Bustamante, an SLP from Las Cruces, presented information on rehabilitation and habilitation therapy services before the committee.  Members of the legislative committee stated that they were not going to allow any services to be cut or moved by HSD at this time.  Medicaid reimburses for services at a rate similar to HSD but the Managed Care Organizations under Medicaid reimburse at a much lower rate.  For more information on this issue contact Dr. Michael Kaplan at stachemannm@aol.com.

NMSHA is looking forward to a busy and productive few months. Our ASHA liaison, Eileen Crowe, will be facilitating a discussion with the Executive Board to revise NMSHA’s strategic plan in September. We look forward to you joining us at the annual conference in October along with continued networking!

Until next month…..

Sandra
