Heather Harris Wright, PhD: Dr. Heather Harris Wright is Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders and Associate Dean for Research for the College of Allied Health Sciences at East Carolina University. Her research focus includes assessment and treatment of persons with aphasia and identifying the influence of cognitive function on language processing in aphasia and
across the adult lifespan. Her previously funded research by NIH involved investigating the interaction among cognitive operations and linguistic components of discourse processing in cognitively healthy adults across the lifespan. Dr. Wright is the North American Editor for Aphasiology and co-Editor of Seminars in Speech and Language. She presented her work at numerous national and international conferences and has been published in several journals including Journal of Speech-Language-Hearing Research, Aphasiology, and Brain and Language. Phillip Schweigert M.Ed began teaching children with sensory and multiple disabilities in 1977. For 21 years he served as project coordinator on a number of federally funded research projects to investigate strategies for assessment and enhancement of communication for learners with severe disabilities. Mr. Schweigert has co-authored articles and curriculum materials in the areas of communication and cognitive skill development. Most recently he served as senior program therapist with New Mexico’s project for children and youth who are deaf or blind through the University of New Mexico. Jessica Mount Matney, M.S., CCC-SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist and Developmental Vision Specialists at the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired – Early Childhood Program. She earned her Master’s degree at the University of New Mexico and Vision Specialist Certification at New Mexico State University. Jessica has worked as an SLP for 13 years, and has spent the last 11 years working with children with severe disabilities. The Communication Matrix serves as the basis for assessment and goal development for all of her students who are non-verbal. Jessica has worked extensively with the staff at NMBVI to make the Communication Matrix the focus of their Intensive Support Program and it is now implemented by the team working in a transdisciplinary manner. Dr. Adrienne Bratcher is an Assistant Professor for Health and Human Services CDIS Department. Her teaching and clinical interests include neurogenic language disorders of cognition/Traumatic Brain Injury/dementia, childhood literacy/phonemic awareness/dyslexia, gerontology, and dysphagia. Dr. Bratcher received her B.S. and M.S. from ENMU and her Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology from Nova Southeastern University. She practiced as a school SLP for 4 years before becoming the Clinic Director at ENMU for 5 years and then taking over as the CDIS Graduate Coordinator and Program Director. Dr. Bratcher held this position for 3 years before taking a 2 year private practice sabbatical and returning to once again teach at ENMU. Dr. Bratcher has also worked at in-patient and out-patient rehab facilities before and during her clinical career for 8 years. Her experience working with individuals with significant cognitive, swallowing and oral motor disabilities and the geriatric population have driven her interest in these areas as well as traumatic brain injury, counseling and supervision. She is licensed as a speech-language pathologist in the states of New Mexico and Texas, and is a certified member of the American Speech-Language & Hearing Association. Dr. Suzanne Swift is a Professor of CDIS at ENMU. Her academic teaching vita includes courses in articulation/phonology, oral-motor disorders, craniofacial anomalies, fluency, language, and AAC . She’s a pediatric specialist, including birth to three and preschool populations delivering services in both home and school based settings. She’s spent much of her career with bilingual populations, including the El Paso Independent School District and with various intervention agencies in and around Gallup-McKinley County. She prefers child to adult treatment interactions because, as she says, “we’re at the same cognitive level, they have better toys, and snacks are usually available somewhere.” Financial Disclosure: No relevant financial relationship exists. K. Todd Houston, PhD, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, is a Professor in the School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at The University of Akron, where he teaches courses on the topics of aural (re)habilitation, Auditory-Verbal Therapy, phonetics, diagnostics, connected health and learning, and professional practices. His areas of research include spoken language acquisition in children with hearing loss, auditory and visual perception of spoken language, parent engagement in the intervention process, the parenting role of fathers of children with hearing loss, the use of social media and social networking to support clinical practice, and telepractice as a service delivery model. Dr. Houston currently directs the Telepractice& eLearning Laboratory (TeLL), which is designed to evaluate the delivery of speech and language services to children and adults through telepractice service delivery models. The TeLL also functions as a preservice training experience for graduate students in Speech-Language Pathology. Dr. Houston writes extensively on these topics and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, editorials, and book chapters. He also is the editor of Telepractice In Speech-Language Pathology (2014), co-editor of Assessing Listening and Spoken Language in Children with Hearing Loss (2015) with Tamala S. Bradham, PhD, and co-editor of Telepractice In Audiology with Emma Rushbrooke, MPhil(AUD) – all published by Plural Publishing (San Diego, CA). Dr. Houston is a sought after presenter, and he continues to conference lectures on a range of topics such as telepractice, listening and spoken language outcomes in children with hearing loss, Auditory-Verbal Therapy, parent engagement, and social media/networking. Timothy Kowalski, M.A., CCC-SLP is internationally known for his work with Asperger Syndrome. He is the author of six books on the subject and is the recipient of the “2010 Clinician of the Year Award: offered by the Florida Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists and the “TEAMS 2000 Speech-Language-Pathologist of the Year” award for the four-countywide greater Orlando, Florida metropolitan area and was one of 8 national nominees for the 2011 ASHA Louis M. DiCarlo Award for the Recent Clinical Achievement. He is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and of Southern Connecticut State College in New Haven and currently serves as Vice President for Convention of the Florida Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. Dr. Joan Klecan-Aker was a college professor for over thirty years. She has taught at the University of Houston, University of Oklahoma Health Science Center and TCU. She retired on medical disability over 5 years ago. During her tenure at various universities, Dr. Klecan-Aker authored 45 papers and two books. The topic of the majority of these publications was in the area of assessment and treatment of schools age children with learning disabilities. Megan Shanley is a RESNA-certified Assistive Technology Practitioner and OT, and she currently works with Southwest neuropsychology and Behavioral Health (SNBH) in Albuquerque providing AT trainings for schools and individual AT evaluations for physical access, life skills and educational support for individuals with disabilities. She has also worked for APS since 1999, including work with the AT Department and the Universal Design for Learning Team. She has presented throughout New Mexico and at conferences such as SWIDA, West Texas A&M University’s Distinguished Speaker Series, the Council of Administrators of Special Education. The Urban Collaborative and the International Society for Technology in Education. As an individual with Dyslexia and a user of AT, she has a unique understanding of the power and challenges of embracing Assistive Technology. Shellie Bader, M.A., CCC-SLP, Regional Director for EBS Healthcare, manages facility partnerships and oversees clinical services assuring quality therapy for the pediatric population.
