1) Contact Information for ASHA CEUs

The New Mexico Speech-Language-Hearing Association is approved by the ContinuingEducation Board (CEB) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)to offer continuing education activities to speech-language patholoists and audiologists. ASHA CE sponsors offer activities which provide participants with an opportunity to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) applicable toward the Award of Continuing Education.

NMSHA Contact: If you have questions or suggestions about NMSHA’s Continuing Education programs or events, please contact the NMSHA Office at nmsha@comcast.net or the ASHA CE Administrator, Lisa Martinez-Nichols at http://lisayvonnemartinez@gmail.com

2) Maintenance of ASHA CEUs

ASHA Certification Maintenance Standards require that all certificate holders (CCC-A and CCC-SLP) must accumulate 30 Certificate Maintenance Hours (CMHs) of professional development during each 3-year certification maintenance interval in order to maintain their ASHA Certificates of Clinical Competence (CCC).

Requirements for Maintaining Your CCCs

• Submit your Compliance Form to verify your 30 professional development hours
• Abide by the ASHA Code of Ethics
• Maintain affiliation by paying annual dues or the annual certification fee

See more information at: http://www.asha.org/certification/maintain-ccc/

3) What is the ASHA CE Registry?

The ASHA CE Registry is the only service that tracks the ASHA CEUs you earn. The ASHA CEUs are recorded on a transcript that lists all the continuing education courses you have taken through ASHA’s network of Approved Continuing Education Providers.

The ASHA CE Registry functions much like a college registrar. In addition to maintaining a permanent, cumulative record of courses and ASHA CEUs, official transcripts are also issued upon request. The ASHA CE Registry is open to ASHA/NSSLHA members, those who are ASHA certified, and other eligible individuals.

More information about the ASHA CE Registry and benefits can be obtained by clicking on the following link: http://www.asha.org/ce/CEUs/

The ASHA CE Registry staff is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. EST by phone at 800-498-2071 or by e-mail at continuinged@asha.org.

4) Types of ASHA Continuing Education Units

There are two broad categories of continuing education courses offered through ASHA

Approved CE Providers: (1) Provider initiated courses, and (2) participant initiated courses.

Provider initiated courses are developed by an ASHA Approved CE Provider and are offered for group instruction or for individual self-study. Examples range from traditional seminars, and conventions to audio or videoconferences, self-study modules, journal clubs, and grand rounds.

Participant initiated courses, also known as independent study, are planned by an individual to meet his or her unique continuing education needs and are monitored by an ASHA Approved CE Provider designated as an Independent Study Provider. Examples include independent study at a college or university, clinical visitations, independent reading, publication of scientific/clinical materials, CE courses of other professional organizations, or teaching a course or seminar for the first time if it is outside the instructor’s routine employment responsibilities.

a) Provider NMSHA initiated ASHA CEUs

The ASHA Continuing Education Board (CEB) approves organizations including NMSHA to be providers of Continuing Education. Once approved, a Provider must submit documentation of the courses it offers to the CEB for review (not approval) at least 15 days before any course offerings starting date. Given this, please contact Mary Hooper CE Administrator 2 months prior to the scheduled event.

b) Cooperative CE offerings

If NMSHA joins with an organization that is not an Approved CE Provider to conduct continuing education courses for ASHA CEUs the course is considered a cooperative CE offering. The ASHA Continuing Education Board (CEB) considers a course a cooperative offering if another party or entity: (1) is identified on the promotional materials (e.g., brochures,programs, flyers), (2) incurs some or all of the event’s expenses, (3) receives some or all of the event’s proceeds, (4) provides or receives any service or benefit in connection with the course, including but not limited to free meeting space in exchange for tuition waiver or publicity, food or audiovisuals equipment in exchange for publicity, and so on. The approved CE Provider who agrees to conduct a cooperative CE offering must ensure that the non-provider entity adheres to the ASHA Continuing Education Board requirements when planning, promoting, implementing, evaluating, and reporting the course.

Approval for any Cooperative CE offerings must be completed 30 days prior to the event start date. Given this, please contact Mary Hooper, CE Administrator, 2 months prior to the scheduled event.

c) Independent Study through NMSHA

Self-study materials (i.e., self-paced courses such as journals, newsletters, computer programs, videotapes, audiotapes, etc.) are considered Provider-initiated courses. Providers considering developing self-study materials to be offered for ASHA CEUs are advised to contact their respective CE Provider Manager early in the development stage for recommendations and instructions specific to the materials they are developing.

d) Alternative Educational Delivery Models

The ASHA Continuing Education Board (CEB) recognizes the growing trend of delivering all or part of a course’s instruction outside the traditional speaker-led, classroom setting. Examples of such alternative educational delivery methods include:

•self-study: journals, newsletters, videotapes, audiotapes, computer packages, web-
based;

•group courses: field experiences, laboratory assignments, assigned work outside the classroom or course, web-based events;

•other evolving delivery mechanisms;

•independent study.

In these types of delivery formats, the amount of time required for the completion of courses varies from one learner to another. The ASHA Continuing Education Board has established requirements and procedures to assist meeting requirements for Alternative Education credits.

More information regarding the types of ASHA CEU events can be found in the ASHA Continuing Education Board manual located via the following link:

5) New Mexico State CEU Requirements

The New Mexico Regulation and Licensing board requires that Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists obtain twenty (20) hours of continuing education every two years. These may be distributed over the two year period, or they may all be obtained in one year. These continuing education hours must be in the field of his or her licensure, or in a related field if justified to the board office. Renewal of a license shall be contingent upon the fulfillment of the continuing education standards and the supplying of evidence thereof by the licensee.
